Understanding Nicotine Strengths in Pouches

Not all nicotine pouches are the same strength, you need to understand the different strengths to choose the right one.

There’s a simple reason why nicotine pouches have become very popular. It’s not the wide variety of flavours on offer, although there are plenty to choose from.

Their popularity stems from how discreet and convenient they are to use. Simply pop a pouch between your teeth and cheek and enjoy the nicotine without using tobacco.

Of course, as soon as you start looking at nicotine pouches you’ll realise that there is a huge variety of flavours and many packets have different strength ratings. We’ll help you understand nicotine pouch strength in this guide.

Pouch Labelling

Every packet of nicotine pouches will be labelled. The label shows, amongst other things, the brand, flavour, ingredients, and the nicotine strength.

Unfortunately, the labelling isn’t the same style on every packet. Some manufacturers choose to display a strength in milligrams per gram (mg/g).

In contrast, others show it in milligrams per pouch (mg/pouch).

You’ll often find that the mg/g strength rating is higher than the mg/pouch. That doesn’t mean the higher number corresponds to stronger nicotine. The problem is, nicotine pouches generally weigh less than a gram. Therefore, a mg/g strength label doesn’t tell you how much nicotine you’ll get from a pouch.

For example, if you consider the average weight of a pouch, a packet which shows 16 mg/g is actually offering 10 mg of nicotine in your pouch.

"It’s the mg/pouch that’s important."

Strength Ratings

Many packets also offer a different indicator of nicotine measurement. They’ll give you a number or a series of dots. The scale is one to five with five representing a very strong nicotine pouch.

You’ll find this simple system helpful when choosing a nicotine pouch. However, it doesn’t tell you the exact nicotine strength level. The scale goes like this:

- Mild packets will have up to 6 mg of nicotine in each pouch - Medium ratings generally have between 7 and 12 mg per pouch - Strong nicotine pouches have 13 to 19 mg per pouch - Very strong packets are usually over 20 mg per pouch

As you can see, understanding the simple scale can make it much easier to choose the packet you want, whether it’s a mild pouch or the strongest nicotine you can find.

Choosing The Right One

It’s not easy to get the nicotine strength right when you first switch from cigarettes. Even if you know how much nicotine your cigarette has, the amount your body gets varies depending on your smoking style. It’s much easier to get a specific nicotine dose from pouches.

We recommend you choose your pouch strength based on the following and, if you’re a little unsure which to go for, start milder. You can always opt for a stronger one next time.

Mild pouches are generally best for light smokers. That’s anyone smoking up to five a day. If you’re smoking between five and ten cigarettes daily then choose a medium pouch. Strong pouches are recommended for you if you like between ten and twenty cigarettes a day.

Anything over that, and you’ll want the extra-strong packet

Summing Up

We recommend starting milder to ensure you find the experience enjoyable. The release of nicotine in your mouth should be a pleasant tingle. If you start too strong, it will probably be too intense and uncomfortable.
